What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin sheets of ceramic designed specifically for you and your teeth.
Veneers are a great option to improve your smile while resolving many teeth problems. Applying veneers is a delicate cosmetic process and must be done by someone with cosmetic dentistry experience. We work with veneers routinely so we know how to create a new, perfect smile designed specifically for you.
What will they look like?
Veneers, which are made of ultra-thin porcelain that are specifically designed on a case by case basis for your needs. Once we bond them to your teeth, no one will even be able to tell they’re there! When it comes to strength and appearance, their resemblance to healthy, white tooth enamel is unsurpassed by other cosmetic options.
How durable are porcelain veneers?
Veneers in most cases can last up to 10 years if they are taken care of properly.
Dr. Helfner and Dr. Curro promise that your veneers are made from very high-grade porcelain and the bonds used to attach your veneers will be strong enough to keep you smiling for years to come. To prolong the wear of your veneers, avoid opening things with your teeth (packages, bottles, cans). If you do break or chip a veneer it is usually possible to replace the one broken veneer. If you’re tired of constantly searching for a “cosmetic dentist in Commack,” look no further than Bonnie Helfner.
What is Zoom! tooth whitening?
Zoom! is another cosmetic procedure we offer that bleaches and lightens any discoloration of enamel and dentin. As a result of searching for a “cosmetic dentist in Commack,” you’ll find that Dr. Helfner’s teeth-whitening strategies are the best option!
What can cause tooth discoloration?
Coffee, tea, and tobacco are the most common causes of tooth discoloration. Over time, enamel loses its luster. Tooth discoloration can also occur by consuming tetracycline, certain antibiotics, or excessive fluoride during tooth formation.
Who can benefit from tooth whitening?
Most people will experience dissatisfaction with the whiteness of their smile at some point. Luckily, this cosmetic procedure only takes about an hour and can help regain your confidence.
How does the Zoom! In-Office System work?
The Zoom! is a light-activated whitening gel. Hydrogen peroxide is the gel’s most active ingredient. As it is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching any colored substance while leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged. This cosmetic, bleaching system whitens enamel and dentin.
Is the Zoom! In-office procedure painful?
It is a safe and painless cosmetic procedure. Some patients have even fallen asleep!
Are there any side effects?
You may experience slight tooth sensitivity to cold after the procedure. If you do experience this, it will last no more than 3 days after the procedure.
How long is the procedure?
The entire cosmetic procedure takes just over one hour. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by one hour of bleaching. A five-minute fluoride treatment completes the procedure.
How is the Zoom! Take-Home System different from the Zoom! In-Office System?
The only real difference between the two is that one is done in your home over the course of a few nights, while the In-Office System is done entirely here at the office in the course of just over 1 hour.
What are the details of teeth whitening?
This quick, safe, and inexpensive cosmetic procedure can be done at any time. Let us know when you would like to get it done!
Which teeth you want to be done and how white you want them is all up to you. Custom bleach trays, as well as a special bleaching agent, are provided by us. After a few hours of wear per day, the special bleaching agent will begin to bubble stains out of your enamel without changing existing dental work or the structure of your tooth. When your teeth have reached desired brightness, you will only need to treat your teeth occasionally in order to maintain your new smile.
How can Teeth Whitening Benefit You
Teeth whitening is a permanent cosmetic solution to fix any discoloration or spotting on the teeth regardless of age. The bleach (kept on your teeth by a clear tray) will then be kept on the teeth for 30 to 45 minutes each night for a total of 1-5 nights (depending on your desired shade). After this time period, your smile will be noticeably whiter. Teeth whitening is a great option for those who wish to have a bright, confident smile, although veneers may be the better and more successful option for multiple stained teeth. Cosmetic procedures are also done to improve dental health and the overall appearance of your teeth.
Considerations for Teeth Whitening
If you want your teeth immediately whiter or prefer to whiten your teeth over the course of a few nights while you sleep, Dr. Helfner and Dr. Curro have the answer with Zoom! This cosmetic procedure system uses new-age technology to whiten your teeth an average of eight shades in a little over an hour and you just get to relax! This cosmetic procedure is ideal for anyone who wants to see immediate results.
Mercury or silver fillings that weaken tooth structure and are very unpleasing to the eye have been used in years past by many dental practices, but these days, tooth-colored restorations (
Tooth-colored restorations can replace your silver fillings if you are unhappy with the look or feel of them. Bonnie Helfner DDS offers resin onlays that bond to the teeth and create a tight fit to the natural tooth, which can help keep the tooth stronger and intact if tooth structure has deteriorated over time. The fluoride used in tooth restoration also helps prevent decay while making it healthier for gums as a replacement at the gum line is not needed. These onlays leave you with a beautiful smile clear of mercury.
Bonnie Helfner DDS and her team of expert dentists can replace your crowns with porcelain tooth-colored restorations if your crowns are ruining the look of your teeth or you feel too shy to smile. It takes only about two visits to get fitted for a crown. The first visit consists of removing any decay, shaping the tooth, and placing a temporary crown while the second visit involves removing the temporary crown and replacing it with a permanent, custom made, porcelain crown. The benefits of this process help replace missing teeth, offers shape to any misshapen teeth or broken teeth, and best of all, they last for a long time (about 30 years) and look very natural!
Dental implants are permanent fixtures that make fake teeth look, act, and feel like the real thing and are a growing part of the new wave of restorative dentistry. Dental implants are fake replacement teeth that take space in the mouth and function the same as any other tooth would. These implants are first secured with an anchor that fuses to the jaw bone followed by a custom made dental crown being attached to the anchor and thus creating a new tooth that you won’t be able to tell apart from the rest. The implants are permanent and help to improve speaking, chewing, and the overall look of your smile. Contact the office of Bonnie Helfner DDS to find out if you are a candidate for dental implant treatment.
If you are experiencing tooth loss, there are a variety of options to help restore the problem. Bridges are an option that attaches artificial teeth to the adjacent natural teeth. This option, unlike others, can either be made permanently or removably. If you are missing teeth it is crucial to fixing the problem immediately. Your teeth work to complement each other and when one or more is missing, stress is placed on the gums and other oral tissues causing harm to happen orally.
Dentures are a device implanted into the mouth in order to replace natural teeth and provide support for both cheeks and lips. There are four types of dentures:
- Conventional dentures are made after all the teeth are removed and the gums have healed.
- Immediate dentures are made and inserted immediately after teeth are removed and tissue can heal under the denture.
- Upper dentures are typically acrylic and flesh colored and cover the roof of the mouth.
- Lower dentures are shaped like a horseshoe in order to leave room for the tongue to move.

Porcelain veneers are a great option to improve your smile by resolve a number of problems, such as smaller teeth and unattractive gaps. Veneers are made of ultra-thin porcelain made specifically for you and are completely undetectable once they bond to your teeth. In some instances, veneers can alter your smile without removing any enamel or tooth-buffering. The strength and resilience of veneers are comparable to natural tooth enamel, and with proper care can last up to 10 years.
Coffee, tea, and tobacco are the most common causes of tooth discoloration, however, the enamel will lose luster over time due to everyday use. What this means is that most of us will experience dissatisfaction with the whiteness of our teeth. Thankfully there is an easy solution to brighten your smile, and it only takes about an hour. Our tooth whitening is a bleaching system that whitens enamel and dentin, the bony tissue behind enamel. ZOOM! whitening is a painless and safe procedure that uses a hydrogen peroxide gel that penetrates the tooth’s surface when one activates UV light. The difference between ZOOM! and whitening at home is over the counter whitening products often can damage teeth and gums.
Restorative procedures are also done to improve dental health and the appearance of your teeth. Silver and mercury fillings are not only displeasing to the eye but they can also weaken the structure of the tooth over time. Porcelain inlays and tooth-colored restorations can strengthen a weak tooth and create beautiful results. The resin used in tooth-colored restorations will wear like natural teeth and also contain fluoride which will protect your teeth. When silver and mercury fillings act as replacements with tooth-colored restorations, your teeth and gums will be healthier and you will love the new look of your smile.
